What is Twitter?



TWITTER - is a free online social networking and microblogging service provided by Twitter, Inc., a private company based in San Francisco, California, U.S.A.  It was created by Jack Dorsey in 2006 and was introduced to the public in  April 2007.

As a Twitter user, you can send text messages (max. of 140 characters per message) to any number of friends instantly. Sending and receiving instant messages is free if done via the Twitter Website.  You can also access and manage your Twitter account thru your cellphone (with Twitter application installed) though you may incur additional charges from your cellphone service provider.

Basic Twitter Terminologies
  • Tweets - refers to the text messages (maximum of 140 characters) being sent and received by Twitter users.
  • Retweets - refers to messages that were sent more than once. 
  • Twitterers/Tweeters - refers to the Twitter users
  • Followers - refers to the individual or group of people (Twitter users of course) that subscribed to received "Tweets" from a  certain Twitter user.
  • Following - refers to the Twitter users you are following or where your tweets are coming from.
  • Unfollow - to unfollow simply means to unsubscribed or to stop receiving "tweets" from a certain Twitter user.
  • Twitter Apps - refers to "Application Program Interface (API)" that allows other web services, cellphones and other applications to integrate and network with Twitter.
  • Twitter Star - A star is a way of marking your favorite "Tweets".
  • Twitter Mention - a mention refers to the @username that is found in the text message. It is used to direct your message to a certain follower.
  • Twitter Marketing - Use of "Tweets" to promote a certain product or service.

Today, almost all famous actors, actresses, celebrities and other known personalities use Twitter to connect with their fans and friends.  TV shows, News Channels, Volunteer  and Advocate Groups,  and other social media groups has begun relying on Twitter to broadcast current events and important updates. And with over 100 million users worldwide, Twitter has definitely became one of the most use means of communication.
